Ugbrooke Park field visit with Devon Ancient Tree Forum

By Tim Kellett

With kind permission of the estate manager Alexander Clifford, Devon ATF member Simon Major organised a great day visit to the estate and parkland, also accompanied and guided by knowledgeable foreman Keith Pike.

The estate was remodelled by Capability Brown in the 1770s including lakes, new drives, selective tree removal and new planting including English Oak, Holm Oak, Turkey Oak and Sweet Chestnut.

Today's management includes re-introduction of some coppicing and haloing of veteran trees in the woodland, plus restoration of Brown's planting lost in the storms of the 1990s. Here are some pictures from the day's visit by Tim Kellett.
